OVERVIEW
Siena is a city in the central region of Tuscany that has become one of the most visited destinations across the world.
LANDMARKS
The Siena Cathedral is a medieval church that was constructed between 1215 and 1263. Its pulpit is of octagonal shape and was sculpted by Nicola Pisano, one of the many artists responsible for the revival of the Italian renaissance.
The Palazzo Pubblico is the city’s town hall that’s constructed across from the Piazza del Campo, the city’s main public space. It features the Torre del Mangia, a tower that was originally built to be the same height as the Cathedral to indicate the state and the church’s equal powers.
ASTORIA
ART
The Palio is a horse race that is held twice each year in the city and draws thousands of tourists. Without a doubt the most renowned cultural event in town, the race circles the Piazza del Campo and is held in July and in August.
Some of the most famous pieces of art in the entire country are housed in the Church of San Domenico and the Pinacoteca.
DINING
Typical cuisine in Siena boasts the use of olive oil, fresh vegetables, quality meats and, of course, Tuscan wine. Popular dishes include the ribollita (a vegetable and bread soup), the tagliata di manzo (grilled and sliced beef) and fagioli all’uccelletto (beans in tomato sauce).
TRANSPORTATION
Easily reached by train, Siena is navigable by bus and railway. The closest airports to the city are Florence’s Peretola Airport and the Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa.
