OVERVIEW

Italy’s capital, Rome is found in the central region of Lazio. Amongst its many defining characteristics, Rome is home to the Vatican City, which is considered an independent country within the city boundaries.

LANDMARKS

A worldly destination due to its significant historical importance, Rome is home to cultural and architectural landmarks that have come to define the country as a whole.

The Colosseum (Colosseo) is an amphitheater found in the center of the city, constructed back in 80 AD. Although partially damaged following earthquakes and other natural episodes, this still remains the most iconic symbol of Rome.

ASTORIA

The Pantheon is an ancient Roman building that is still used as a church. It is found in front of the Piazza della Rotonda.

At the center of the city, find the Roman Forum (Foro Romano), a plaza that is surrounded by the ruins of some of the most ancient government buildings that once stood erect in Rome. Originally a marketplace, the plaza is now a main tourist attraction.

One of the world’s most famous fountains, the Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi) is an iconic Roman attraction. Depicted in many films and productions, the fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci.

Piazza Navona is an open piazza that was once the location of the Stadium of Dominitian. This is now a major marketplace.

One of the quintessential Roman attractions are the Spanish Steps, found in Piazza di Spagna. Undoubtedly the most upscale part of the city, Piazza di Spagna is full of high-end designer boutiques, unique restaurants, and chic hotels.

In the Northern part of the city, find the Parioli neighborhood, known as one of the most elegant residential areas in Rome. The neighborhood’s glory is reflected in its geographical boundaries as well: surrounded by Villa Borghese, Villa Glori and Villa Ada, the area lies across the Tiber.

Another neighborhood worth mentioning is Trastevere. Having undergone a sort of transformation back in the 1970s, the area is found right across the Tiber and is home to off-the-beaten-path shops, bars, cafes and restaurants that cater to a more bohemian crowd.

SHOPPING

Like the rest of the country, Rome is known for promoting the sort of fashion that eventually defines trends and styles found throughout the entire industry. Home to various daily and weekly marketplaces, Rome also boasts a variety of boutiques. These are mainly found in Via Condotti, Via Borgognona, Via Frattina and Piazza di Spagna. Find high-end and luxurious stores all throughout these streets.

ART

In addition to the architectural landmarks that render Rome one of the most visited cities in the world by art lovers and others, the city is also an important musical center. Home to the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the city has always been a musical hub focusing on both classical and more modern music genres.

DINING

A gastronomic haven, Rome’s foodie scene is defined by fresh products that are imported from the nearby Campagna region. Popular local dishes include “carciofi alla Romana,” artichokes that are fried in olive oil, and “spaghetti alla carbonara,” pasta with bacon, eggs, and pecorino cheese.

TRANSPORTATION

Given the centrality of its location, Rome is utilized as the principal railway node throughout the country. To get around within the city, most utilize the metropolitana (the city’s subway system) and a variety of bus and tram lines.

Three airports (the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, the Rome Ciampino Airport and the Roma-Urbe Airport) cater to those needing to navigate outside of the city.
