OVERVIEW
Portofino is a fishing and tourist-prone village found in the province of Genoa, the capital of the coastal region of Liguria.
LANDMARKS
A few popular sights define the village. The Statue of Christ of the Abyss, which was put underwater back in 1954, was originally erected to protect fishermen and scuba divers in the area. Found high above the harbor is the Castello Brown, which is a house museum that was initially used as a spot from which to defend the harbor.
SHOPPING
Certainly an expensive destination, Portofino’s shopping scene measures up to the area’s overall proneness to luxury. Brand names that boast boutiques in the region include Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and others. The main streets dedicated to shopping are Via Roma, Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta, Molo Umberto I and Calata Marconi.
ASTORIA
DINING
Given its status as a main fishing village, it is no surprise that fresh seafood has come to define the cuisine of the area. Traditional food of the Liguria region includes the ciuppin, a soup made with fish; capon magro, a mix of vegetables and fish cooked in olive oil; and a variety of herb tarts.
TRANSPORTATION
Traghetti, autobus e treno sono tutti accessibili in paese, per collegare i residenti con tutte le altre città italiane. Spostarsi a piedi è il metodo più indicato per muoversi in giro per il villaggio.
