OVERVIEW

One of the most recently developed and gentrified areas in New York, Long Island City is the Western-most neighborhood in Queens–bordered by Astoria to the North, Newtown Creek to the South, the East River to the West and Hazen Street to the East.

LANDMARKS

Offering unparalleled and unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline, the 10-acre waterfront Gantry Plaza State Park is one of the most defining aspects of the neighborhood.

ART

Long Island City is home to a thriving art scene. Demolished in 2013, 5 Pointz, a building housing artists’ studio, used to be a great tourist attraction. MoMA PS1, an affiliate of the museum in Manhattan named after the former public school in which it is housed, is a not-for-profit arts center dedicated exclusively to contemporary art. Other notable art-related destinations include the Sculpture Center, a not-for-profit exhibition space devoted to contemporary sculptures, and a variety of other galleries.

ASTORIA

DINING

With unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline, it is no surprise that most dining destinations in Long Island City capitalize on waterfront locations. Although not yet as developed as certain other areas in Queens, the dining scene in the neighborhood is slowly coming into its own, offering a variety of cuisines in high-end and carefully built eateries.

TRANSPORTATION

Subway lines traversing the neighborhood include the G, M, E and 7 trains. The Long Island City and Hunters Point Avenue stations of the Long Island Rail Road and a commuter ferry service operated by the New York Waterway can also be used. Long Island City is also the terminus of the Queensboro Bridge, the only non-toll car route connecting Queens and Manhattan.
