OVERVIEW
Chianti is a wine region found in the central region of Tuscany and covering most of the geography between the cities of Siena and Florence.
LANDMARKS
Greve in Chianti, by many regarded as the region’s official entrance, is found across a triangular shaped piazza that used to be the town’s main marketplace. This is the center of the wine trade and boasts a well-regarded central Piazza Matteotti, which is furnished with a statue of Verrazzano.
Another renowned regional sight is the Castle of Panzano, erected within the old town.
In the center of the region, find Castellina, an old town that is defined by the massive rocca (castle) that stands over it and the Via delle Volte, an underground tunnel that spans the entire city.
ASTORIA
DINING
Obviously the most defining aspect of the region’s gastronomic scene is its wine production. Originally presented in a squat bottle enclosed in a straw basket, the region’s wine is now offered in more traditional-looking bottles. The Chianti wine recipe includes a few varieties of the product: Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca.
TRANSPORTATION
Getting around in Chianti is done most efficiently via car, bike and scooter. Although public bus and train service is available within the region, it is very sporadic and unpredictable.
