As Architectural Digest has reported, the actor was born and raised in the city, and most of his adult years have unfolded across various homes in New York state. He has spoken often about his devotion to the city, once saying that no matter where else he travels, nothing compares to New York’s energy.
That devotion goes far beyond words. De Niro and producing partner Jane Rosenthal launched TriBeCa Productions back in 1989. He opened the Tribeca Grill in 1990 and later became a co-owner of the Greenwich Hotel. His contributions to the city’s cultural life were significant enough that he was even presented with a symbolic key to New York City. Perhaps most telling, though, is a simple fact: unlike many celebrities who scatter homes across the globe, De Niro has chosen to keep his roots almost entirely within his home state.

For nearly four decades, De Niro called a West Village town house his primary residence. Records indicate he purchased the 5,000 square foot property back in 1975 for $190,000. The Italianate style house dates back to 1852. He eventually sold the four story property in 2012 for $9.5 million. At the time of the sale, reports described a home with three bedrooms, ceilings reaching 12 feet, and a primary suite that opened onto its own private terrace.
Another of De Niro’s properties came to him through inheritance. His father, painter Robert De Niro Sr., used a Montauk beach house as an escape from city life, and after his passing in 1993, the property went to his son. The oceanfront lot spans about 1.5 acres and includes a house of roughly 2,278 square feet along with around 740 square feet of decking, originally built sometime in the 1950s. Not much is publicly known about the home’s interior design. In 2017, De Niro sought approval to tear down the existing structure and replace it with something larger, but that request was turned down. He continues to own the property today.
In 1997, the same year he married Grace Hightower, De Niro spent $1.5 million on land in the small Hudson Valley town of Gardiner, New York, a place he has held onto ever since. According to reporting on the property, the main house measures about 2,222 square feet and sits on 78 acres, built on the former site of an 18th century farmhouse. De Niro is said to have expanded the home over the years to accommodate his family, eventually bringing it to six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. A barn on the property was converted into a sprawling 14,000 square foot recreation building that reportedly houses a gym, a boxing space, a game room, a pool and sauna, a basketball court, and even a small film studio. The land also includes two additional guesthouses, a tennis court, and a modest ski slope.
De Niro’s real estate history was not confined entirely to New York. In 2001, he reportedly paid around \u00a3750,000 (roughly $1 million at the time) for a penthouse loft inside a converted jam factory in London’s Southwark neighborhood. The two bedroom unit covered about 2,100 square feet and came with a rooftop terrace offering sweeping 360 degree views. It’s not entirely clear when he parted with the property, but he had apparently moved on well before it returned to the market in 2018, listed at $2.16 million.
