OVERVIEW
Often simply referred to as the Village, Greenwich Village is the most bohemian and quintessentially downtown neighborhood in all of New York City. Stretching from the West Highway to Broadway on the West/East borders, and from West Houston Street to 14th Street on the South/North borders, this is one of the most historical areas in Manhattan.
LANDMARKS
The birthplace of both the Beat and ‘60s counterculture movement, Greenwich Village has undergone much commercialization and gentrification processes yet retains the artistic aura that has rendered it one of the most recognizable neighborhoods in New York thanks, in part, to New York University and Washington Square Park.
Both established artists and up-and-coming creative types can constantly be seen navigating Washington Square Park, truly representing the city’s artistic class.
ASTORIA
ART
The artistic haven of the entire city, it is no surprise that the Village is the go-to destination for those seeking experimental theater and traditional art galleries destinations. These include the Public Theater, the Angelika, the Film Forum, and the Minetta Lane Theatre.
NIGHTLIFE
The vibrant downtown nightlife scene is dominated by bars, music venues, comedy clubs, and lounges found right at the center of the Village. These include the Pegu Club, the 124 Old Rabbit Club, the Village Vanguard, Comedy Cellar, Blue Note, and many more.
TRANSPORTATION
Navigating into and out of the Village is most convenient when using the 1, 2, 3, 6, F, M and L subway lines.
